The Socorro Division is the southern-most division of the MRGCD.  It serves the irrigated acreage in Socorro County from the village of San Acacia south to the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge.  The Socorro Division also delivers water to the refuge.

The Socorro Division was originally served entirely by the San Acacia Diversion Dam built by the MRGCD around 1935.  In recent years, a large portion of the Socorro division water supply has originated at the Isleta Diversion Dam.  Improvements to the MRGCD’s drain network have been made to allow the conveyance of as much as 180 cubic feet per second to the Socorro Division directly from the Belen Division.  This has greatly reduced the amount of water which must be diverted from the Rio Grande at San Acacia.

The Socorro division is the second largest division in the MRGCD and has inherently greater conveyance efficiency than other divisions.  This is due to both the physical configuration of the system, one large trunk feeding a limited number of laterals, and larger farm size with limited urbanization.

The Division operates and maintains about 180 miles of canals which provide irrigation for the benefit of about 13,632 acres and is staffed by 23 employees.
